Recorded alcohol consumption decreased, production increased in 2024

Alcohol consumption recorded in statistics decreased in 2024, while its production increased from 2023. A total of 532 million litres of alcoholic beverages were produced, showing an increase of roughly eight per cent from the previous year. Out of beverage groups, the production of beer, mixed beverages and distilled alcoholic beverages increased, whereas that of cider and fruit- and grape-based wines decreased.
In 2024, the recorded consumption of alcoholic beverages was 513 million litres. Measured in 100 per cent alcohol, that corresponds to 34.6 million litres. In 2023, the corresponding figure was 519 million litres, equalling 35.5 million litres of 100 per cent alcohol. The consumption of mixed beverages increased by 2.1 per cent and that of mild wines by 0.7 per cent. In other product groups, consumption decreased as follows:
- beer 1.2%;
- cider 8.4%; and
- spirits 9.7%.
On-trade sales started to decrease in 2024, with the decrease being almost four per cent measured in litres. Alko’s sales fell by more than seven per cent, while other retail sales increased by half a per cent, with the total decrease in retails sales being approximately one per cent.
The statistics on the sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages published by the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health (Valvira) include deliveries of alcoholic beverages by holders of production and wholesale licences to restaurants and for retail. At the end of 2024, there were 221 production licences for alcoholic beverages (229 in 2023) and 520 (545) wholesale licences.
Licence holders must report product-specific sales to Valvira on a monthly basis. Valvira collects, examines and analyses data from the perspective of supervision. Data are saved in the alcohol trade register maintained by Valvira. Sales of beverages containing more than 2.8 per cent and at most 80 per cent of ethyl alcohol by volume are included in the sales and distribution statistics.
The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) compiles official annual statistics on total consumption using data available in Valvira’s alcohol trade register.
