Alcohol statistics

The National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health (Valvira) publishes two monthly statistics on sales of alcoholic beverages:

  • The statistics on alcohol sales include information about sales of each product group in litres divided between serving and retail. The information is published monthly and calculated from the beginning of the year.
  • The statistics on distribution channels include information about sales of beer, cider, mixed beverages, mild wines and strong alcoholic beverages divided between serving and retail (Alko’s sales and other retail separately). The information is published in litres and 100% litres monthly and calculated from the beginning of the year. Sales of beer, cider and mixtures are divided according to the alcohol content by product group.

The statistics on alcohol sales and distribution channels published by Valvira include sales of alcoholic beverages by holders of production and wholesale licences to restaurants and for retail.

Licence holders must report product-specific sales to Valvira on a monthly basis. Valvira collects, examines and analyses the information for the purpose of supervision and saves it in the alcohol trade register. The statistics include sales of beverages containing more than 2.8% and at most 80% of ethyl alcohol by volume.

Valvira's alcohol statistics are published in Finnish and Swedish.
